It was in 1969 that Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar was first published. The New York Times voted it one of the 10 best picture books of the year. The book has since been translated into 47 languages, sold more than 29 million copies and reportedly, a copy is sold every 30 seconds somewhere in the world.

To mark the anniversary, a pop-up book version of the much-loved story has been released featuring Carle’s illustrations in a three-dimensional format. I can’t wait to get a copy.

Carle’s caterpillar is certainly well-recognised by young and old alike. And pops up in all sorts of places.
For a young fan, make a hungry caterpillar cake like this one from Coco Cake Cupcakes.
Or craft your very own hungry caterpillar like this one on the Softie Making site from a tutorial by Craftblog.

And even Google got in on the act this year, marking the anniversary with a special-themed logo back in March.
You can find out more about Eric Carle and his books on his website or catch up with what he is doing now and his shares his news and some of his art on his own blog.
