74 ways to be inspired: the what and why of blogging ~ for me

{writing ~ my notes (by me)}

If you are reading this, you probably love blogs. You might have your own blog, you might like to just read blogs, you might be thinking about starting your own blog.

Now, as I enter my third year of blogging {and it feels amazing to be able to say that!}, I thought I might write a few posts on blogging. Now I’m no expert, there are plenty of people out there who  have blogs on blogging, but I have learnt a few things along the way and feel I may now have two cents to add to the discussion. I had an a-ha moment.

For the first two years, I struggled with two things.

  1. What is my niche?
  2. Why do I blog?

If you read blogs about blogging, then these are recurring themes. Not to mention friends and family, you can barely turn on a computer, asking “so why do you spend all that time doing that?”

Only last weekend did I have that “a-ha” moment to answer these questions.

I was reading this post by Jade Craven on The 5 types of people you need to know to be successful online. And there it was  ~ a word to describe my niche.

I’m a curator.

I enjoy hunting and gathering information from all over the web, I like sharing and disseminating that information to you. It falls into certain categories, I guess, but it is information I’m interested in, and I think, and hope, you are too. And I sprinkle that with posts on my own projects and thoughts.

I guess really it may have been obvious, I think it might be just timing, it would seem things are starting to click.

And I can’t tell you how much putting a label on my niche has helped me. Acknowledgement, confirmation, confidence, authority, meaning ~ if you combined all those words it would go some way in describing it.

I guess, I feel like a blogger.

I guess that’s why I feel now, I may have something to offer the conversation.

Now, why do I do it? That I can’t still put into words. Because I enjoy it, because I’m a journalist by trade and that’s what do, because I love it. It could just be that simple.

I am not sure why labels help us understand things but they do. Have you thought about all the labels you go by everyday? It helps define us, give us reasons for the things we do each day and somehow makes us feel better about things – boundaries and lines in which to live in. I am glad you have found your label – this mum, wife, friend, worker, gardener, crafter, family cook….. is off to find her another title/ label.

Blogging has helped me feel less isolated. I love being able to share my thoughts and ideas. I don’t know if I can label myself or my blog, because both (being one and the same) are in a state of flux. I change, therefore my blog changes with me. Reading the article, the closest I come to is a Cheerleader, but not always so.

  3. I’m so glad you blog, and you are one of the best blogging curators around. Whenever I want to see what new, interesting, quirky, this is where I come. Congrats on 3 years! I’m off to see what “type” I am!

  6. Some of my favourite blogs are of the curating kind. So glad to have discovered yours. :)

Meanwhile, my niche is kind of obvious like a fist in the face! But in saying that, I enjoy stepping outside of the niche sometimes, too. And I think it still works. Afterall, I am more than the little mumma. And the mums who read along feel the very same, I know.

Hurrah! It can be so freeing to actually have a label – which sounds weird, right?

You never fail to impress me with the calibre of your curation, Kel!

I think the curator role suits you perfectly. As someone before me said, I come by here anytime I want some new stuff to check. But I also like your photo projects a lot, too.
Anyway, I would like to be a curator when I “grow” up, I think it’s one of the coolest online roles, but I am too messy of a Internet user to be able to find an order in everything I click on every day… Maybe you’d like to share some secrets one day, in an e-course or something (^_^)

  11. I just wanted you to know that what you wrote in this post has been a great source of inspiration? reflection? consideration? ~ as you can see, I am still in the process, so it’s hard to name it ~ but I’ve thought about this since reading it, realizing that I’m struggling with the very questions you mention. It was great to see a beautiful blog such as yours share that. I’m still soooo new here in all this, I am nowhere near finding the answer, but at least I know what the questions are!! And I wanted to say thanks and that I learned something meaningful here on Lime Lane. It’s such a lovely place to hang out! :)

Thanks Bonnie, I’m glad you stumbled across this. It is a hard balance – I mean it is all me but in reality, my personal life isn’t worth writing about, I would rather be that escape place online! So glad this has helped you in whatever way, that kind of feedback makes it completely worthwhile.
