{pretty pulp} lovely packaging

One thing that has been on my to d olist for a while is packaging for my shops. In fact on my list it says “review Lime Lane marketing materials”. I mean in all honesty, high on the list is “spend some time on shops” but one has to start somewhere.

I have lots of ideas buzzing around ~ when do we not ~ but can’t quite pin down a neat, little packaging idea that I am entirely happy with. I have a picture in my head but it is still a little blurry, if you know what I mean.

So two things:

  1. I pull together some pretty packaging ideas ~ it’s fun, inspiring and helpful.
  2. And I throw it open to you ~ what stands out for you when you receive a package from a handmade seller.

My “research” finds the following might be part of the list:

  • it should be like opening a gift
  • there should be a personal thank you note
  • a free gift like a postcard or print
  • a return discount voucher
  • recycled wrapping
  • eco-friendly wrapping

You know what, this is helping already!

What do you like to find in your parcel when you buy something handmade ?

I love pretty packaging (but you have probably worked that out from my pins!). I agree with everything on your list so far, but one thing i think is important, if you can, is to have it in packaging that people want to keep and or use again. This means there is the potential to have your name on it and people will have it on their pin up board, in their wrapping box, on the fridge because it is so pretty! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with

That’s a good point Kate, I forgot to mention that but that is something I’ve also been trying to make a part of my packaging. Part of the reason I’m never entirely happy.

I know from my own personal experience of buying things, I love it when the packaging is a little unusual – like I ordered something from the USA and it was wrapped in a local newspaper that I got to read. And I love free things – like bookmarks and postcards and the type of nifty things that ‘upon a fold’ enclose (usually something like fold this in a certain way and it becomes a rabbit kind of stuff). Stamps are gorgeous ie ink stamp marks. And very definately a personalised greeting of some sort – it makes me feel much closer to the person I just bought from. Usually the main theme seems to be something you can keep, or something you can use again/turn into something else. Though I think a lot of that may add to your overhead costs.

Thanks Leisa for that great feedback. I agree about the stamps, which is why I have some lined up here on the desk! And the big question is the keeping the balance with the overheads. Really appreciate your input.
ps. And I like your “recently posted” ~ might have to check that out :)

Great post. I don’t package things as I have an aversion to wrapping paper- such a waste! However I do tie everything together in bakers twine and put a hand written card with a big My Bearded Pigeon logo on it with a speech bubble coming out of it s mouth- like my etsy avatar and thena tag I made saying thank you for buying handmade, indie and eco friendly. I don’t do freebies as I often don’t know what to do with the ones I get. If people order a few things i will offer a discount on there next order. I also decorate th envelope with nice deco tape and stamped with little bird feet along the side.

Thanks Cath for sharing that. I agree with the freebies although I like to include a little bit of extra art. And I do a discount too for certain orders. Appreciate the feedback!
