what’s your ‘one thing’?

What’s the ‘one thing’ you want to do? Your dream job or project.

I’ve been thinking about this lately because of my own dream project.

A magazine.

Yep, once a journalist always a journalist. I’ve always wanted to bring to life a publication all of my very own. [Notwithstanding the cut and paste jobs I made as a child.]

Time is my greatest enemy here. There is a lot of work going into an “edition” and to make it a regular thing, well that’s a big commitment.

But I hold on to the dream, storing ideas away in my head, thinking of ways to make it happen.

I have even gone as far as started a design, secured a domain name and even a Twitter handle.

And so then I wonder, do you have a dream? And what’s holding back your dream?

I think it would be great to be able to match people’s skills and ideas with other people’s skills and ideas to bring some of these dreams to life.

But sometimes we are afraid to ask.

So I’m going to put it out there, I’ll go first.

Anybody want to help develop a magazine? Let’s talk. I’m mainly looking for some regular contributors.

And second, do you need help with your dream? Maybe we can help?

I’d love to illustrate a children’s book, for “real” publication. Maybe some day there will be more time….

In the meantime, my hours are very limited, but if there’s any way I can help with your dream, let’s talk. I’m interested.

I’ve always wanted to make my own magazine too. I’ve done a few projects for personal use and for friends that use the magazine style and form and have always found it to be the most beautiful cross between a novel, a work of art, and eunoia. I’m ALWAYS jealous of those startup magazines that come out with quarterly releases and have that quality paper and are just gorgeous. And being someone who has so many interests, always wanting to do things new and exciting but ready to go back to the old and riveting, always felt like a magazine was my calling too!

I just don’t make pursuing it right now a priority 

Esp because I’ve never been a part of the publishing world.

Right now though, I’d love to start planning for when I’ll be done with engineering, and get ready for my trip around the world next year. I can’t be more excited to clean up, let go, and start over. And still be able to use my student ID card.

I have so many interests, too, Sarah, but always come back to the same as well. It’s why I can’t let go of this magazine thing! Although you will have lots to write about and share after a trip around the world! How exciting!

Hi Kellie, I have made the jump into freelance writing this year (travel, women’s health, parenting & lifestyle) and would love to be a regular contributor to a magazine. I think it is so important to create your own opportunities to achieve your dreams. I would love to hear more about the details of your magazine dream and if I can help in some way. xxx

Hi Lisa, Lovely to meet you! I will pop you on my list of people to get in contact with. It’s funny how putting something out in the world brings it that little bit closer to making it happen. Certainly has given me a little impetus. Good luck with the freelancing!
