Today we have Vanessa from Beauty in the Detail, a shop featuring a range of Japanese washi paper gifts and jewellery, joining us in the limelight.

 Introduction

I live on the sunny northern beaches of Sydney. I am a stay-at-home mother of three littlies and in my “spare” time I create one of a kind, jewellery from Japanese chiyogami washi paper.

Tell us about your craft

I use decoupage techniques to apply the paper to raw wooden pendants of various shapes and sizes. The end result is a piece that has the look of a hand-painted item. They are very eye-catching and feminine and appeal to all ages.

Your inspiration

All my life I have been drawn to decorative designs … everything from mosaics, to Middle Eastern rugs, to Tiffany and Murano glasswork … so it is no surprise that I have recently fallen in love with washi paper.

Each sheet of washi paper tells a small story of the world around us. The mood may be dreamlike, soft, whimsical, bold, sometimes even dramatic. But no matter the story, our world is always rendered in intricate and colourful detail.

I would say that my inspirations hark back to good old Mother Nature… she was the world’s first artist and has inspired so many others since.
