a new “craft” for a new year

So the Creative Collective January project was trying a new craft. Now as usual I had big plans, and little time, and after seeing some other’s new crafts, I have suddenly thought of several other things I would have liked to try.

Anyhow.

My original thought was collage, as I love paper, and I had some ideas, but, aah the execution, never got there.

Then I bought a little something, which arrived last week,  more in keeping with my “craft” {ie. photography} and it suddenly hit me ~ this was trying something new. {And as I have pointed out ~ the whole stiching, knitting, sewing thing, never going to be me}.

So, what is it? This is a Diana mini camera. It’s a film camera and only has basic settings, despite which, as you can see, take some skill to master. These shots are from my first roll of film over the weekend ~ I need lots of practice and I might have to do a little googling. In the digital age, as polaroid age, it’s a strange sensation not knowing quite how your photos will turn out.

1. geraniums 2. selfie 3. a sunny spot

But it was a lot of fun and I look forward to some more learning and experimenting. And one day, I might just try collage, too.

a new home and a new project for the creative collective

I can finally reveal that little project I’ve been working on.

We at Creative Collective are so excited to launch our brand new blog and forum today!

The Creative Collective Blog is where you can keep up-to-date on all the goings on of our projects, news and more! The Creative Collective Forum is the perfect place chat about all things crafty and creative, make some new like-minded friends and have a blast! We have been working hard to bring you a new crafting experience through both the blog and forum and we can’t wait to see you there!

this month’s project

Be Inspired:

The theme for this project is Random Acts of Kindness!! Traditionally Valentine’s Day is about the one you love, but in this day and age of so many people feeling disconnected from the world we thought it would be nice to go out there and share some love with some strangers.

We’re asking you to create five postcards with a message of love, support, hope, inspiration and leave them in random places through out your town or city.  The idea is to leave them as a surprise for someone else to find.

We’d also love for you to put the Creative Collective contact information on them so that people can get online and let everyone know that they’ve found your special card. To help we’ve developed a postcard template that can be downloaded from the new Creative Collective Blog. (Instructions for use of template will be provided at the Creative Collective Blog.)

We want to see what you have created! Take a photo of your newly created craft item where you hid it and then upload it to the Creative Collective Flickr Group or the Facebook Page. Don’t forget to include, in the comments/description fields, clues (not the actual location) for how people can find the card, how you made the card and what materials you used. The more information you can leave the greater the chance of the image being used by other people and the cards being found.

As cards are posted to Flickr and Facebook the ladies of Creative Collective will post them to the Creative Collective Blog with your clues on how to find them.

This project runs from today until February 28, 2011.  At the end of the month we’re asking all members of Creative Collective to blog about their favourite cards and stories of finding them. The founding members will certainly be blogging their favourites!

Now it is time to get your craft on!  We can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

Conditions:

  • All items must be handmade by you.
  • You must not leave personal contact details on the cards. (Like your phone number or address.)
  • By submitting your photos to the Creative Collective Flickr Group you are agreeing to letting these images be used on other blogs associated with this challenge.
  • All photos you submit to the Creative Collective Flickr Group must not have copyright restrictions. This will allow the Creative Collective Members to feature your images on their blogs.
  • All images used to promote this Creative Collective project must be credited to the source.
  • Please only submit photos related to this challenge.
  • By submitting photos this project you are agreeing to adhere to these conditions.

festive fanfare … in January

So new year has come and gone, the Christmas decorations packed away and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, but, I’m going back in time, or giving you some ideas well in advance for 2011 Christmas {hey, it will be here before we know it}.

My round-up of the Creative Collective Christmas card swap ~ better late than never ~ right before the January project wraps up.

So, here are the five cards I received as part of the swap. It’s so nice to get surprise snail mail. Especially when you open it up and find these.

  1. Always jealous of people who can do paper-cutting, but Ashley Pahl is very talented. You can check out more of her work in her Etsy shop.
  2. This is one my favourites ~ by Rebecca of Petite Marguerite {pop over and buy some for yourself!}
  3. So simple and so beautifully done ~ by Carina of immersed
  4. More clever work from Tracey at Quiet Paws ~ it opens to this sweet scene inside.
  5. And finally this one from Anca ~ I love those skates. What a creative idea!

the heartbreak of natural disaster ~ how we can all do our little bit

Surreal. Watching the raging floodwaters submerge houses, throw cars around like toys and inundate entire towns, I can only look on in shock and amazement at the pictures on the television from the comfort of my lounge room, far far away from the devastation happening in my own country, the occasional tear running down my cheek.

It’s unbelievable.

The Queensland Government has launched an appeal to help those affected. Many communities have been devastated. Some families have lost everything.

All of us at the Creative Collective are making a donation to the Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal to show our support for the victims.  You too can help make a difference by donating to the Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal.

Also, Toni at Make It Perfect is having an auction starting in a few days and Sophie of That Vintage is auctioning some of her gorgeous pieces on facebook now.

Animal lovers ~ help out the RSPCA.

A group of Australian Etsians have set up a flood appeal shop that will go live tonight.

I’m sure there are many, many more. Please feel free to leave links to fundraisers in the comments.

It doesn’t matter how much or how little you can give, to whom or how, every bit counts.

creative collective january project

This month it is all about the new! New year, new ideas, new resolutions, new goals, and for this month, a new craft. Hey, maybe you can join the fun and cross a new year’s resolution off your list at the same time. This is a tough one for me ~ I’ve tried lots of creative pursuits and failed at most. But I have some holidays and some small helpers to maybe have some fun with something new.

What about you? Is there something you have always wanted to try?
